Alex Yoong made his formula1 debut with just three races
of the season left. The Malaysian driver made history by
becoming the first non-Japanese Asian driver to compete
in the sport, and had his first outing at the 2001
Italian Grand Prix.
Rumours that Yoong would be taking over from Tarso
Marques before the end of the season flew for much of
the summer, and once the 23-year-old acquired a
Superlicene from the FIA the team were able to confirm
that he would race from Monza.
Yoong brought with him much-needed funds from the Magnum
Corporation Berhad, and other sponsors, including new
title sponsor KL, soon followed.
The Malaysian finished his first race at Suzuka last
season, and now must prove his worth and attempt to
score points.
