India's Top Colleges

This is the complete list of India's most wanted colleges taken from the very in depth and accurate survey conducted by the Gallup organisation and India Today who  conducted a poll among 450 senior academicians which included principals, vice-principals, deans and heads of departments spread across the country to select the top 10 colleges in India. The objective of the survey -- carried out in eight major cities -- was to rate the colleges in the identified streams based on certain attributes that would help students choose a college. The disciplines covered by the survey include arts, science, commerce, medicine, law and engineering. The cities surveyed were: Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Lucknow. The survey gives the top 10 colleges in each of the general as well as specialised streams. As parents struggle to pick the right college for their wards and students fill up multi-coloured forms, the detailed findings of the survey should help them to zero in on the institution that best fulfils their aspirations.

If you think your college deserves to be a part of this list and for reasons unknown has not made it, do mail us your College name and details so we can add it on to this section.

Students describe this 131-year-old institution as "the coolest place on earth". But there's something about St Xavier's College, Mumbai, that makes the high and mighty beg, plead, cajole and sometimes even threaten the principal to admit their wards. As Fr Joe Dias SJ, the principal, puts it: "It's the liberal and homely atmosphere that is the main attraction." No matter what your social background, ideology or goals are, there's room for everyone -- leftists, capitalists, scholars and even aspiring rock stars. It is perhaps the liberal culture that makes Xavierites acutely aware of their ultimate goal: academic excellence. No wonder, the college even allows its students to rate their teachers on levels of competence and interaction.

Each of the 450 academicians surveyed was asked to name the colleges they were aware of, both within their city and outside. Next they were provided a comprehensive list of colleges and their awareness of these was assessed. The respondents were then asked to distribute 100 points across the seven specific parameters on a high-to-low importance basis -- reputation, curriculum, academic input, student care, admission procedure, infrastructure and job/placement opportunities.

The respondents assigned higher points to the aspects they considered as very important. The average importance assigned to each aspect was cumulated for every discipline. To arrive at "ranks" within a particular discipline, the "importance" assigned by a respondent to a particular parameter was multiplied by his rating of the college on that particular aspect. Adding such weighted ratings across the seven aspects help arrive at an "importance weighted rating" for the college. This rating for every college was then subjected to a second-level of weighting. The proportion of the people who are aware of a particular college was multiplied with the college's "importance weighted rating" to arrive at "overall cumulative ratings (weighted)" for every college. The colleges were thus ranked based on their "overall cumulative ratings (weighted)".

Having come into being before any other college in Tamil Nadu, the Presidency, Chennai, is regarded as the mother of the University of Madras. Among the most prestigious and reputed colleges in those days -- only the privileged class studied there -- it is the alma mater of such greats as Nobel laureates C.V. Raman and Chandrashekar, as also people of eminence like former Maharashtra governor C. Subramaniam. Facing the vast Marina beach, the college founded by Lord Elphinstone in 1840 lives on in the glory of its past. Its buildings wear a dilapidated look, but it still maintains an intangible decorum within its hallowed walls. The labs are quieter, but its strength lies in its PhD courses -- it has over 200 research scholars.

Each year, goes the lore, chartered accountants who are SRCC alumni, save taxes equivalent to the Indian GDP. And how do they do it? As principal J.L. Gupta puts it: "The focus is to get two things right -- get the best students and the finest faculty." But getting into this niche college (it mainly offers courses in commerce and economics) is one of the toughest things to achieve. The only college in the country which boasts of a placement cell that attracts as many blue-chip companies as any business school. In fact, last year it launched its own business school and the buzz is that it is going to give a tough competition to the IIMS. The SRCC alumni includes I&B Minister Arun Jaitley, Standard Chartered Bank CEO Tony Singh and IDBI chief G.P. Gupta, among others.

When the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was set up in a far-flung, marshy village of Mumbai called Powai, very few expected students to assemble in the quadrangle, leave alone the classrooms. Forty years later, IIT Powai is among the best known addresses in the world of engineering -- churning out students who have made a mark in all spheres of life. Such is its reputation that when the government cut funds in 1992, IIT alumni got together to contribute $20 million (Rs 90 crore). Silicon Valley tycoon Kanwal Rekhi gave $2 million for setting up a School of Information Technology and Infosys md Nandan Nilekani donated Rs 11 crore. Academic excellence apart, the first lesson a student learns here is humility. That's what is paying off now.

Called the Harvard of the East, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) was established by an Act -- Karnataka Act 22 of 1986 -- under the sponsorship of the Bar Council of India. The law school runs BA, LLB (Hons) degree programme (80 seats) and masters and doctoral programmes (50 seats) and is famous for excelling in Moot Court competitions in India and abroad. As NLSIU Director Professor N.L. Mitra, an expert in banking, investment and corporate laws, says, "The school is a pace-setter for Indian legal education and is a testing ground for bold experiments." Needless to say, the school has on its governing body and faculty some of the top-notch legal luminaries from the country and abroad.

Almost 30,000 students sit for the AIIMS entrance examination each year, but only 50 lucky ones make it. And lucky they remain, for the curriculum at AIIMS is considered the best in the country, unusual because it is revised each year based on student response to teaching modules. What also makes AIIMS so special is the dedicated faculty of nearly 500 medical experts who pack into a single day crowded OPDs -- around 6,000 patients visit AIIMS every day -- lectures, seminars, practicals and research work. Their motivation? Total academic freedom and no limit on what multi-disciplinary research you would want to pursue. This even makes up for the lower salaries they draw as compared to their contemporaries in trendy new, corporate-style hospitals.
